At Sheepshead, we are proud of our reputation for helping our short term stay patients reach their optimal level of activity and movement quickly and successfully. We serve patients recovering from a hospital stay, cardiac episode, general surgery or joint replacement.

Recognizing that our short term stay patients are often younger and more active, we have placed our rehabilitation unit in a separate area of the facility, with its own dining and recreational areas. The hotel-like rooms, furnished and decorated elegantly, are a complete departure from the old images of a “nursing home”.

Our delicious cuisine is made with the finest, locally grown ingredients and our kosher kitchen guarantees the purity and freshness of all our meals. WI-FI capability ensures that patients can stay connected to business and social contacts. These are the amenities and “extras” that will make a short term stay at Sheepshead, pleasant and home-like.

But what really matters is the restoration of optimal function and that’s where our therapists truly excel. They are hand picked for their skills and total dedication to their patients. Trained in the most prestigious educational centers in the country, these skilled clinicians use the latest techniques and treatment modalities that will help patients get back on their feet quickly.

Our rehabilitation gym is extremely pleasant, with large windows looking out on Sheepshead Bay. The spacious and pristine rehab gym is equipped with the most state- of-the-art equipment available today. Our standards are high. At Sheepshead you will receive the gold standard in care: focused physician involvement and maximum therapy time customized to your needs and capabilities. We want you to get better and we will do everything we can to help you reach your goals.

Specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, our highly qualified team of nurses and therapists coordinates a program of comprehensive rehabilitative care. Our program includes intensive physical and occupational therapy provided by licensed physical, occupational and speech therapists, under the supervision of our board certified physiatrist. Individualized care plans with regular assessments and evaluations are developed for each patient.

For stroke patients, Sheepshead's rehabilitation therapists meet with the patient and family to obtain their input as they develop a plan of care. They take the time to educate family caregivers about prevention, medication management and coping strategies. Our interdisciplinary team provides the cognitive and behavioral strategies that will enable persons with a brain injury or other neurological conditions to return to work, school and community activities.

Our therapists effectively address physical, emotional, social and communication challenges to optimize functional independence. They provide:

• behavior management
• cognitive retraining
• spasticity management
• neuropsychological testing and treatment
• augmentative communication
• gait and balance training

Our speech therapists treat speech and language problems following a stroke or a debilitating disease.  Patients can regain the ability to relate commonplace objects and images with the correct words. With therapy, dysphagic patients relearn how to swallow properly (in stroke patients), how to breathe when eating and how to regain voice strength.
